Girls rule, boys drool. ”I am woman, hear me roar!”
Especially in the Barbuzzo kitchen this Sunday.
Chef Marcie Turney and Valerie Safran are hosting an all girl chef’s dinner, Made with Moxie, in honor of Charlotte Druckman’s new book. Skirt Steak: Woman Chefs on Standing Heat and Staying in the Kitchen gives an in-depth, behind-the-scenes look into the lives of women chefs.
Journalist Charlotte Druckman walks the reader into the world behind the hot line. But this is a different perspective on the kitchen: one told through the voices of more than 70 of the best and brightest women cooking today, These are female chefs performing culinary and domestic high wire acts: juggling sharp knives, battering heat, bruising male egos, and working endless hours, often while raising small children and living from paycheck to paycheck. How they deal with pressures, the expectations, the successes and failures, makes for absorbing reading.
The dinner will feature six of Philadelphia’s best and brightest female chefs including Natalie Maronski from Chifa, Anne Coll from Meritage, Susan VanVreede from Distrito and Lindsay McClain from Jamonera. Additionally, Jen Carrol from Concrete Blonde in NYC and Monica Glass from Clio in Boston are making a special trip to the city for the night. Of course, Chef Marcie will be cooking, too and guest mixologists Phoebe Esmon from Spirit Animal and Katie Loeb from Han Dynasty will be on hand to shake and stir you through the night.
The $95 dinner includes six courses each paired with a beverage and a copy of the book. See the full menu here. A portion of the night’s proceeds will be donated to Women Against Abuse which provides emergency shelter, transitional housing, legal services, behavioral healthcare, advocacy and education to Philadelphian women in need.
It’s sure to be a totally girly and wonderfully delicious night. Eat your heart out, boys!
