- 1974 – Gerald Ford becomes president after Richard Nixon formally resigns. Only eight months before, Ford had replaced Spiro Agnew as vice president, paving the way for him to take over for Nixon.
- 1976 – Hurricane Belle hits the United States’ Eastern Seaboard. When it is finished, it kills 12 people and causes $24 million in damages from North Carolina to Vermont.
