The Stephen Starr – Garry Maddox Barbecue Challenge is back

There's nothing better than a little friendly competition. Especially one that yields some killer bar-b-que and quality family time.

Steven Starr and Garry Maddox join forces again to find the city's best BBQ.

As made evident by the recent stunning displays of Olympic spirit, American’s love to compete…and lipsync “Call Me, Maybe”. American chefs are no different. And, in just 11 days, Philadelphia’s best chefs will take to the grills to show off their skills.

The Stephen Starr – Garry Maddox Barbecue Challenge returns to Citizens Bank Park on August 11. Restaurant teams and pit master teams compete in separate divisions for bragging rights to the best barbecue. The day ends with Garry’s Rib Challenge, a winner-take-all contest for a trip to the 2012 World Series.

Get ready for three hours of good eats and entertainment from 3:30-6:30 p.m. when twelve restaurants and 45 pit master teams compete for the best barbecue.

This year’s event will pit teams from six of Stephen Starr’s restaurants including Continental Mid-town, El Vez, Butcher and Singer, El Rey, Jones and Pod against other local barbecue restaurants like Famous Dave’s BBQ, El Camino Real and Bull’s BBQ. The competition also features a pit master division.

Another thing Americans are really, really good at? Raising money for charity. So, as with any good PR event, all proceeds from the BBQ Challenge will support a cause close to home. The event will  support YGAP, an organization founded by Garry Maddox to support the education and development of children who reside in troubled city neighborhoods.

But, the good food and family fun including raffles — one of which will get you invited to brunch for you and five friends before the cook-off with two of Philadelphia’s all-time baseball legends: MLB Hall of Famer Michael Jack Schmidt and the Secretary of Defense Garry Lee Maddox.
