  • 1961 – Six Flags Over Texas becomes the first in the chain of amusement parks to open. Located in Arlington, it is the first to feature a log flume and mine train rides.
  • 1498 – Italian explorer Christopher Columbus sets foot on the American mainland for the first time, at the Paria Peninsula in present-day Venezuela.
  • 1914 – What would become known as World War I begins when, four days after Austria-Hungary declares war on Serbia, Germany and Russia declare war on each other, France orders a general mobilization and the first German army units cross into Luxembourg in preparation for the German invasion of France.
  • 1981 – MTV: Music Television goes on the air for the first time ever, with the words “Ladies and gentlemen, rock and roll.”
