- 1985 – At Wembley Stadium in London, Prince Charles and Princess Diana officially open Live Aid, a worldwide rock concert organized to raise money for the relief of famine-stricken Africans.
- 1951 – Rivers across eastern Kansas crest well above flood stage, causing the greatest destruction from flooding in the midwestern United States at that time. Twenty-four people died and 500,000 people were left homeless.
