Friday: Secret Cinema at the Cemetery

The Secret Cinema project began in 1992 when film collector, Jay Schwartz, realized the need to expose new audiences to neglected films of all kinds. Since then, The Secret Cinema has shown films in dozens of locations around Philadelphia, ranging from private living rooms to 1000-seat capacity 19th century burlesque theaters. This summer, the grainy joys of the film experience will be brought to audiences at everyone’s favorite neighborhood cemetery.

Join us on Friday the 13th at Laurel Hill for this summer screening under the stars. The evening will commence with a a rare screening of a court-ordered exhumation film shot at Laurel Hill Cemetery in 1937. Now, 75 years after this celluloid vestige was made, it will be screened for the public among the very graves that gave it purpose. Afterwards, The Secret Cinema will screen the evening’s feature film, Plan 9 from Outer Space. This 1959 science fiction thriller was directed by Ed Wood and bills Bela Lugosi, posthumously, as the star. The film’s plot, which hinges on aliens resurrecting the earth’s dead, has earned it the unofficial title of “Worst Film Ever Made,” but its charm and entertainment value has spurred much more positive interest in recent decades. Love it or hate it, this American cult classic leaves a lasting impression.

Films, location and date combine for a one-in-a-million kind of evening, promising campy content for conversation for years to come.

Saturday: Craft Spoken Here’s Hostess Crafting with Aimee Olexy
