- 1967 – Actress Jayne Mansfield is killed when the car she is riding strikes the rear of a tractor-trailer on I-90 east of New Orleans, Louisiana.
- 1972 – In Furman v. Georgia, rules by a vote of 5-4 that capital punishment, as it is currently employed on the state and federal level, is unconstitutional. The Court did, however, suggest new legislation that could make death sentences constitutional again.
- 2003 – Actress Katharine Hepburn dies of natural causes at the age of 96 at her home in Old Saybrook, Connecticut.
