It is officially summer, and temperatures are rising. Therefore, I am running more. Confusing? Maybe for some, but I enjoy running in the heat. For me, so much of running is mind over matter, and the more I’m sweating the harder I feel I’m working, ergo heat running is my thing. The extra vitamin D is an instant mood booster, too.
I have, however, been reading that the summer heat, vacations and this time of year tend to put a damper on some people’s running schedules. I suppose that makes sense, but I’d like to start making a better effort to get out there everyday. To hold myself accountable, I have committed to the first-ever Runners World summer running streak. As of yesterday, Memorial Day, I will run at least one mile per day, everyday, until Independence Day. That is 38 consecutive days of running. As for day one, I ran eight.
I have never attempted a running streak; up until now, I had never even thought about one. But I do have a few things I am trying to change in terms of my running, and I saw this as the perfect opportunity to do so.
I would like to become more of a morning runner. Schedule wise, it’s one of the best times of day to run. It starts my day on the right foot, runs off early anxiety, keeps stress low and helps me maintain a schedule. I hope to get most of my miles logged in the morning.
With that said, I would also like to log more miles each week. I’m tossing around the idea of running the Philadelphia Marathon again, and this is the time to really buckle down and make that decision. Running everyday helps log miles.
There are so many ways running benefits me. Among other things, I’m much more productive on the day of a run, I’m happier, I sleep well at night, I eat healthier and all around just feel more alive. That’s the kind of stuff that can only make every one of my days better. To boot, this is a fairly short non-threatening length of time for me to commit to.
So did you run yesterday? If you did, why don’t you join me on the streak? More info can be found on the Runners World site here: RW Summer Running Streak 2012 – Runner’s World. Didn’t get a run in yesterday? Streak vicariously along with me; I’ll certainly take all the support I can get.
