I like to find motivating ways to keep myself running and training so I don’t get lazy. I also like goofy dogs. Put these together in a Google search box and what do you get? The Monster Milers, of course, and a perfect way for me to marry my love of dogs with my love of running.
What are The Milers about? Simply put we are a group of runners who love dogs, running and volunteering. Our primary mission is to connect Philadelphia runners with homeless dogs as running companions. Currently, we are running with dogs at three locations in Philadelphia – two Philadelphia Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) locations, one in Grey’s Ferry and another in Old City, as well as Street Tails Animal Rescue (STAR) in Northern Liberties (that’s my home shelter).
The next best thing to having my own pup right now is getting outdoors with one from STAR and taking him or her on a nice 30 minute or so run around Northern Liberties. There is something innately wonderful about the reciprocated adoration of a dog who knows you have love for them. If you were wondering, yes, it is hard not to want to take each one home, but I know I have to be realistic. I know, too, I am doing my part by getting us both some much needed exercise and fresh air.
Aside from running the dogs, The Monster Milers are also bringing the dogs out to local happenings and sponsoring Adopt a Running Buddy Events. We have two coming up in the next two weeks. If you’re around, you should swing by and meet some of our four legged friends, chat with us about how you can get involved as a volunteer and buy yourself a t-shirt to help show your support.
The Adopt a Running Buddy Events are:
• Sunday May 20th 9am at the Schuylkill River Trail (at Locust Street) on the Schuylkill Banks
• Saturday May 26 8am at 4231 Avenue of the Republic following the OODyessy Half Marathon
