It’s Foursquare Day. Get it? Four, squared…April 16th. Yea, I know. It’s a bit of a stretch, but regardless, it’s caught on about as quickly as the actual app, and now we have a day to celebrate. But, celebrating Foursquare Day is not just something that comes and goes. It’s an actual event. Similar to New Year’s Eve or St. Patrick’s Day, but with lots of coupons and discounts at area retailers and restaurants, naturally.
Well, for every other city in the world, that’s how you celebrate. Here, in Philly, we’ve gone all out. Instead of booze and prizes, we have the Philly Foursquare Day Games.
Based cleverly on the incredibly popular teen book turned movie phenomenon, The Hunger Games, the Philly Foursquare Day Games will actually pit two “tributes” from area organizations against each other for the survival of the fittest real life Hunger Games competition.
OK, so no one will starve, or die (hopefully), or sleep in trees, or be attacked by giant balls of fire, or encounter huge beastly animals with the eyes of the deceased competitors…you get the idea.
The unique celebration is even being recognized as a City Spotlight on 4sqDay.com along with small towns likeĀ Kennesaw, Ga and as far away as Instanbul, Turkey.
SMC Philly, Geekadelphia, PANMA, Indy Hall, InLiquid, P’unk Ave, Technically Philly, William Way Center, Drink Philly will all compete. They will be fueled with energy drinks from Liquid Lightening and, in a bit of irony, food will also be provided. But, as they say, “Foursquare and checking in works up an appetite.”
So, head on out to Marion Anderson Recreation Center where the games will start at 7:30. “A victor will crowned. Losers may cry. All of it will be livestreamed. The world will be watching.”
After all, Philadelphia really is the epicenter of the world. This is just another wonderful example of why.
