Here at Rittenhoused, we take no pride in our ability to break news, to report everything that’s happening in Philadelphia, to be the news source of record for the city. That’s not us. As we say on our About page, “We’re a voice for Philly.”
That’s why, even though we have written numerous times about the ongoing sexual abuse case against leaders of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, we haven’t covered the daily developments of the trial.
But the news that came out today regarding secret Catholic church documents was just too, well, sick for us to ignore.
The U.K.’s Daily Mail, of all places, carried a story online today revealing that jurors heard testimony about a priest who joked about “how hard it was to have sex with three boys in one week.”
From the story:
Giving evidence, a detective read internal church memos about a priest who is said to have ‘joked about how hard it was to have sex with three boys in one week.’
The priest’s accuser also alleged that the priest had a ‘rotation process’ of boys spending time sleeping with him.
The evidence is part of the prosecution’s evidence, which includes Catholic Church documents that were revealed in court for the first time yesterday. It’s all part of the case against Monsignor William Lynn, who is accused of helping the Archdiocese of Philadelphia bury priest abuse complaints in secret files.
The case is ongoing, and it’s unfair to judge anyone before the full details are released, but this is pretty damning evidence against Lynn and his co-defendants. If these documents are proven to be legit, it would be hard for any juror, no matter how impartial, to let slide.
