Think the end-all-be-all for pizza is New York or Chicago? Then you might be surprised to hear that the World Record holder for pizza memorabilia is right here in Philadelphia. And, the owner of the more than 1,000 piece collection has banded with some buddies to ask for the public’s help to put their project, Pizza Brain, on display.
The group of four guys have issued a plea on start-up site, Kickstarter, and are raising money to make their dream of a pizza museum a reality.
“For the past year, we’ve been tirelessly working to get this vision off the ground,” Pizza Brain’s Kickstarter profile reads. “Currently we’re busy renovating a building in Fishtown, the epicenter of Philadelphia’s burgeoning art community.”
By spring, it’s the guys hope that this revitalized 19th century storefront will be the new and permanent home to their collection, as well as unique restaurant that serves delicious artisan pizza, naturally.
So, what do they need? Well, to be blunt, $15,000. And, fast. If they don’t raise the money by April 1, the project could disappear forever.
The good news is, they are getting there. As I’m writing this post, they’ve raised more than $5,000 and have more than 100 backers.
So, can it be done? Can they get nearly $10,000 in just over 30 days? The roughly $300 a day is a tall order, but according to Kickstarter tens of thousands of people pledge millions of dollars to projects on the site every week. And, thanks to a report on the Huffington Post, the guys are getting some serious attention.
And, local blogs are helping to spread the word, too, disabling the notion that pizza is just for the Big Apple or Windy City.
“Sure, we’ve always had pizza mainstays like Tacconellis, Lorenzo’s and Stantucci’s, but it seems every time we turn around another pizza-centric spot is popping up. We just can’t get enough of the slices coming out of pizza ovens at Zavino, Barbuzzo, Nomad Pizza, Dock Street Brewery, Slice, Blackbird…” the bloggers at UWishUNu wrote in their post about the campaign.
So, it’s our time, Philadelphia. Stand up in the spirit of the pizza pie. Let’s put our name on pizza forever.
