Vesuvio wins online poll for “best bar” – whatever that means

A Vesuvio specialty, the cheesesteak BLT.

Vesuvio Restaurant & Bar has won an online vote for Philadelphia’s best bar – though some of that may have been a grudge vote.

What we know is that Vesuvio ranked #1 for Philly on MojoPages, a national Yellow Pages website that solicited votes for bars across the United States.

Located near the Italian Market, the South Philadelphia business got praise from customers for the drinks – though Yelp users give mixed reviews about the food.

But a notable number of people in MojoPages’ customer comments section specifically praised Vesuvio by way of insulting Chickie and Pete’s, the chain of crab houses and sports bars that sued a Maryland restaurant last year for using the term “crab fries.”

A commenter calling himself Phil S said about Vesuvio, “Love this place. So much better than Chickie’s & Pete’s!!” Llewella C said, “Nice place, well run, they don’t sue people”

That sort of thing.

It makes you wonder what lies behind this. Were a bunch of people with smart phones drinking at Vesuvio one night when a rumor raged through the room that Chickie’s & Pete’s might win if Vesuvio didn’t get out the vote? (None of the Chickie & Pete’s locations even placed in the top 10, by the way.)

Whatever. By all accounts, Vesuvio’s drinks are cheap. Drop on by.
