Where sidewalks are blocked around City Hall, don’t take to the streets

The map shows, in red, where the sidewalks are blocked off around City Hall.

People are just used to walking their usual route – along the same sidewalks they usually take around City Hall.

So now that some of those sidewalks are blocked off for construction, some people are just walking along the streets next to them, according to the WHYY.

And Mayor Michael Nutter is asking people – nicely – to stop doing that.

“There is sidewalk directly across the street,” Mayor Nutter told a press conference. “Unfortunately, it might add about two minutes to your time to get to wherever it is you’re trying to get to. Public safety is paramount, as opposed to temporary inconvenience.”

Paul Levy of the Center City District added, “We recognize that people like to go in their normal customary routes, but as the mayor said, that would be extraordinarily dangerous.”

The construction fence wraps halfway around City Hall, on the 15th Street side, blocking the front of Dilworth Plaza.

The project will continue for more than two years. So it’s probably time to develop a new walking habit.
